Game-changing contactless pedestrian system helps reduce spread of Covid-19

To help beat the pandemic, UK-based ITS solutions provider SRL has launched the first contactless mobile pedestrian system for temporary crossings, enabling pedestrians to reduce contact with surfaces that could potentially carry the Covid-19 virus.

The Wave and Wait sensor can be incorporated into both new and existing SRL Pedestrian Portable and Temporary signals, including intelligent solutions that coordinate multi-directional flow of traffic and pedestrians. Pedestrians who are visually impaired can still use the touch button, but there is also the option of using the contactless option, which is indicated by a waving hand icon.

Committed to helping the country combat Covid-19, SRL currently supplies around 70 variable message signs (VMS) to councils across the UK, promoting safety and directing people to testing sites.

SRL’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Tredwin, comments:

“Throughout the pandemic, SRL has worked hard to help the country to tackle Covid, and Wave and Wait is a game-changer. The product has already generated considerable interest, and I am confident that, once we’ve left Covid behind, the market for contactless pedestrian systems will continue due to the heightened global awareness of the importance of hygiene.”

In 2003, SRL became an industry pioneer, developing and achieving approval for the UK and Republic of Ireland’s first multi-phase temporary traffic light. Once again, with Wave and Wait, the company is launching another first in the pedestrian market and is committed to delivering further leading-edge traffic management solutions.

TSM has recently invested in some of SRL’s latest portable traffic signals for use with roadworks. The new SRL Eurolight Master portable signals are equipped with an Adaptive Detection System, which utilises algorithms and a radar detector to clear congestion 50% faster than traditional signals. Committed to investing in the latest technology, we are very excited to learn of SRL’s latest innovation, primarily as it provides a means of fighting the spread of coronavirus. We anticipate considerable interest from clients around the country.
